The Mission

Founded by two journalists, Six Eye Films makes documentaries exploring critical social justice issues in Florida. The mission of Six Eye Films is to tell intersectional stories with visual artistry and compelling narratives that get to the heart of issues of climate change, the environment, immigration, and health inequality. Based in South Florida, Six Eye Films has a keen interest in telling stories about the American South and how its past seeks to reckon with a new future.

Meet The Team

Max Maldonado is a documentary filmmaker based out of New York City.

Growing up in Florida, Max became fascinated by the state’s complicated history, politics, and relationship with nature. Starting his career in journalism at his college’s radio station, he started to become intimately familiar with the issues that his community faces.

Aside from working in documentary filmmaking, Max is also an accomplished audio journalist and has recently contributed his service to the Reveal podcast from the Center of Investigative Reporting on their Covid Tracking Project miniseries.

He is also a graduate of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, where he specialized in health and science reporting. In February, Max accepted a year-long fellowship with FRONTLINE.

José Jesús Zaragoza is a Tejano writer, photojournalist, and documentary filmmaker based in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Born and raised in Eagle Pass, Texas, a border town, José comes from a family of migrant farmworkers. He began his journalism career in high school, writing for a bilingual newspaper that covered the U.S./Mexico border.

After moving to Florida, José advanced in his career at local newspapers as both a writer and photojournalist. His work there eventually led him to become the publisher of three newspapers serving communities near the Florida Everglades.

José is the co-founder of Subtropic Film Fest, dedicated to elevating independent filmmakers from the South Florida region through events at the Norton Museum. Additionally, José serves on the advisory board of Stet News, advising on video reporting and governance.

José’s rich journalism experience, strong visual style, and deep connection to his family and cultural heritage give him a unique perspective in his documentary projects.
